Real-Time Monitoring of Moving Marine Life Even in Zero Visibility Conditions

In the Marine Research and Ocean Sciences sector, the real-time monitoring of dynamic operations and marine life underwater is a necessity. This is especially true when trying to understand complex dynamics in the biological and marine sciences. From monitoring and tracking fish and schooling behavior and responses, to volumetric stock assessments, the Echoscope® real-time 3D volumetric sonar will give researchers clear insight into any situation underwater in real-time and regardless of zero visibility water conditions.

By generating over 16,000 beams per acoustic transmission and with a frame rate of up to 20 pings per second, the Echoscope range of sonars can “see”, position objects, and map the underwater scene in real-time, providing unique 3D acoustic movie imagery. Across a variety of frequencies (240 kHz – 700 kHz) and viewing angles (20ox20o to 90ox44o), you can customize your viewing of the biological and environmental processes that drive our aquatic environments.

Unlike a standard multibeam, the real-time 3D volumetric Echoscope does not need a moving vessel to instantly visualize both moving and static objects underwater. By adding a MOTION GPS positioning sensor, the Echoscope and complementary CodaOctopus® Underwater Survey Explorer (USE) visualization software can create constantly displayed geo-referenced images as data is collected. This means the Echoscope can be deployed in a stationary position if necessary, to monitor fish movements through a river or canal, or even their responses to nearby predators or vessel traffic.

With the integration of our Integrated Pan and Tilt (IPT) and Integrated Single-Axis Rotator (ISAR) the capability of real-time monitoring is significantly enhance, particularly for slow or static deployments such as barges. The IPT and ISAR allow for the remote control and movement of the Echoscope. If you see a target you’re particularly interested in, the Echoscope can track the target and automatically follow it, outputting positional information in real time for additional analysis.

The real-time 3D volumetric Echoscope also can be deployed from Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), providing valuable visualization of the little known deep aquatic environments for the removal of sediment, debris or critical assets. It can immediately identify complex targets, such as downed oil platforms, sunken vessels, or natural and artificial reefs, and observe fish behaviors in response to these structures.
